update carrier settings ?

Hi everyone this is my first posting so I hope im in the right forum section

I have a 2G iphone unlocked on 2.0 firmware and itunes 7.5 and I am on Orange.
Every time I connect my iphone itunes tells me that there are new carrier settings that can be downloaded.
So far I have cancelled this message as I dont know if this will brick my phone.
Does anyone know if it is safe to download these new carrier settings.
