Iphone not recognising international format

If I store a number as lets say 078912345678 with the name joe bloggs but then receive a text from the same person it comes up as 447891234567 with the last digit missing and the name doesn't show up either. Is there a way I can get my phone to recognise the 44 number as a stored number?

currently on 1.0.2 and an xp machine.
