Firmware problems. Please help!!

When i download a firmware from the downloads section on my mac it downloads a folder instead of a .ipsw file and i cant use it. My iphone has currently got a usb cable and an arrow pointing at an itunes logo. When i restore i get error 1603. I was thinking if i download a firmware i could use the pwnage tool to restore it. Any help would be aprecciated. Thanks in advance.

Are you using Safari when you download the ipsw file?
