WIFI active when phone on stand-by?

Hi,

Does anyone know if the iPhone's (1.0 or 2.0) WIFI is active when the phone is on stand-by? I.e., if I hit the stand-by switch will the phone still have an IP address and receive e-mail? If not...has anyone been successful with any 3rd party apps that do this??

it turns itself off in standby mode just to save battery.

havent heard of an app that keeps it turned on? it would make the battery life even worse than it already is
