I just picked up a new 3g iphone, my 1.1.4 is jailbroken as I have Att, well I want to unlock and sell my old iphone.

After I go through and format/unlock my old iphone, how exactly does someone that buys it use it? Do they just put in their sim card and call their provider and activate the phone?

no.. they just simply insert their sim card without calling their carrier unless they wanna change plan (i.e. add data plan)

so should I connect my 3g after I unlock this old one? or can I go ahead and connect it, get it updated etc. then after the fact just wipe and unlock the old one.

just don't wanna screw myself or anything

I'd wait to wipe the 1G until I knew the 3G was all set. So connect the 3G after your final 1G back-up, update it, then prep the 1G for sale.
