iPhone 3G syncing time unsually long?

So everytime i sync my new iPhone 3G, the status bar at the top says "backing up iPhone"....is there way to shut this automatic backup off?

Because this makes overall sync time like 10 minutes.

I dont know, maybe this is just a new feature in iTune 7.7., which i really dislike.

Yes i was wondering this also, it does seem to take a very long amount of time to do the backup?
