Hello, I am planning on getting an iPhone, I was just wondering if you need to purchase any additional features to use the phone?
Also, will there be any charges for certain apps on the iPhone or are all of them free.

You don't need to purchase anything additional to use the phone. Do you plan on using AT&T? If you jailbreak your phone, the majority of the apps are free. If you use the App Store, most of the apps there are pay apps.

for example, you will get charged for sms unless you have it on your plan

Yes, you will be charged for using some apps. Some have registration fees to use all functions. If you plan on using any apps that use the internet, make sure you have a data plan; same goes from text.
