Iphone malfunction during activation

I bought my son an iphone and am trying to activate it before I wrap it. I started the activation process (filling in info etc) then I got a hardware malfunction error. I tried another laptop and get a similar error. iTunes doesn't show that the iphone is even connected. Is the phone broken or is there some other cause?

Yo Braski, I would recommend you git yo phone into restore mode homie.

I figured it out.....apparently the iphone needed me to use one of my hi-speed usb ports not a regular one.(i got a popup on my laptop informing me that the iphone needed the other usb port).
