Possible to use iPhone 2G without iPhone plan?

I am getting the iPhone 3G on Friday, and one of my dad's friends wants to buy my iPhone 2G. He has AT&T, but doesn't want to get one of AT&T's iPhone specific plans. If he were to just pop an AT&T SIM card into the phone, would it work as a phone and texting device, even if the internet and Visual Voicemail don't function?

My first thought is that it shouldn't be a problem, but I'm specifically looking for an answer from someone who has taken a regular AT&T SIM and stuck it in an iPhone without an iPhone plan. Thanks very much =)

Works fine, you just need to jailbreak it and activate it.

I've done it, and as JedixJarf stated, it works just fine. I used BossPrefs to disable EDGE because I only use Wifi, other than that I took my AT&T SIM out of another phone and used iLiberty+ to activate/JB/etc. Since your phone was already activated, he should be able to slide his SIM in and be good to go.
