Hey Everyone, I work at cellphone repairs, and I have seen sever water damaged iphones and moisture crippled lcd's. I havent tried this and not going to, since that protective film my fellow mates are refering to is the same film used on speakers in cars to and other home theater systems, all that is poly Styrofoam structure...some fones have it mixed with other materials also.

So does this work, yes it does, best if you remove it altogether tried to few fones that came for repairs (water damaged)...had to put the tape back on them again, once they were fixed...

Moisture or water damage chances are slight high but not anywhere close to as I was reading from other members, if we are really talking on this topic, moisture and humidity has much of a damage to risk ratio by shorting the charging port which I have replaced so many times due to water corrosion or damaged port..plus its a much larger open area with no flap to close it.

I have not done this to my fone, didnt need to, I personally dont need it, no point, to increase sounds, downloading iclarified soundfix plus setting sound on bass-reducer preset gives you pretty decent sounds, loud and clear I like it. Moreover I use more my headfones when at college and such so dont really use the speaker port that much anyways....

But poking a needle will make your sound sound a little louder no doubt.

I hope I didnt offend/scared my fellow members here, this will help clear most confusions to other members... Happy Modding!!

There may be risks but having a phone that I can't hear ringing if the music is loud is just... pointless. But now... oh my.

It is LOUD. I really thought people might be exaggerating but it really does become so loud... For some reason, I think the phone keypad seems most affected. Anybody else feel this?

I went to Apple complaining about the sound being muffled & they gave me another iPhone no questions asked. They didn't even try and listen to it. I told them I tried to restore and clean the holes but they didn't help. So by pick those holes you can get some better sound until the holes get dirty again. If neither work, take it back to Apple to get another iPhone. We have an 1 year warranty anyway.

I am so ticked off !!!

The ringer volume and speaker phone volume was so bad on my phone from day 1 that as much as I love this phone I was about to get rid of it, best phone in the world is no good if you can't hear an incoming call to use it on !!! I have posted this problem on every site I am a member of, half a dozen times on each with NO fixes offered by anyone.
And now I find out all I had to do was punch a couple of holes???? LOL..
All I can say is "THANK YOU" for this fix.. I can now keep my phone..

This does work......

With the holes that u really cant puncture, dont force it! only do the holes that are easy to slide through!

To get clearer, better sound PUT YOUR EQUALIZER TO BASS REDUCER...

I was very skeptical when i first read this...but i thought it was probably worth a try...i mean, if you're careful and dont poke too hard, whats the worst that can happen? So i decided to try it and i only got the pin tip to go thru about 2-3 holes on each speaker, so i guess the film can only be punctured in a few holes. I didnt think poking holes in this film could have any effects....but when i tried it i actually noticed an increase in the volume...I'd say its very worthwhile.

if you punch holes in the screen what do you do if they get clogged with dust/lint?Im guessing one of two things, Poke the holes clean? Which will eventually result in stuffing your iPhone full of dirt/lint or sucking it out with your mouth.. Which is kinda sick. LOL
This is just hypothetical. Has anyone that has poked holes in the mesh, experienced lint clogging up the holes?

Each speaker?! There's only one speaker on the iPhone - the left one. The other "speaker" is the microphone; I wouldn't go messing with that.

The actual speaker on the iPhone is recessed about half an inch from where the membrane is, so don't worry about damaging the actual speaker. I've had my antenna cover off and can confirm this.

I did this mod months ago and have had absolutely no issues with dust, dirt, etc.

After reading this entire thread I decided to give it a try but headed in a little different direction. I first used a 1/8th inch drill bit and a hammer drill to gain access to the speaker cavity, I then inserted a 6 penny nail in the hole and applied force with a 3 lb sledge hammer, EUREKA!!!! My phone now reminds of being at a Metalica show in the 1st row!...... Seriously, I did do the pin puncture thing and it does seem to add some decibels to the ring volume, now the true test will come later in the week when I'm at the bar and half in the bag, if I can hear it then its a true success story!
