From those photos of the antenna cover being removed and showing the speaker grilles, it doesn't even look like the grilles themselves are the problem, it's all the glue and crap on them. As if the manufacturing process was essentially to take the mesh and apply a bunch of adhesive to one side. In which case, that's going to be about as good for airflow as sticking a piece of tape over the vents.

If that's the case, the problem is pretty obvious, and so is the fix for Apple...fine tune the manufacturing process so adhesive is only applied to the extreme edges of the mesh.

works fine on a week 50 otb 1.1.2

just don't push too deep, it's just the thin membrane you have to pierce..

i admit that i, like everyone else it seems it nervous about doing this....but i read and i was confident learning the location of the actual speaker....i used an unbent staple to break through and it sounds a lot louder now. you can figure out where the circle of the speaker hole is because there are other holes that seem to have hard plastic behind them...they seem to be more for looks.

1.1.3 only a month old and I tried it with a staple. It works beautifully! It has to be an intrusive screen, because I know that I can't have that much crap blocking it. Happy poking.

This quick fix is genious. I thought my ifone was perm damaged because my volume was so low. Not even iClarified volume fix for 1.1.3 helped but now with the help of a paperclip my ifone is louder than ever. Eureka! Major thanks to whoever figured this out first. True ifone hacker, LOL.

This 'fix' has been around on the net for a while. Problem is that the membrane that is pierced is there to prevent moisture from entering the case at that weakpoint. Some sources report up to an 80% greater risk of damage from moisture on iPhones where this low tech mod has been done. Sources available upon request.

Gotta say that it is much louder now. I used a needle and now I can actually hear my phone ring in my pocket!
