Error 1011 brick - what do you suggest me to do?

Hello everyone,

I'm sorry to begin my forum membership with a question so frequently discussed. I've already read a lot about the 1011 problem and it since the various forms of advice given agree that one should be careful in any rescue attempt and that it greatly depends on the exact symptoms of your phone, I decided to rather post a new thread.

I purchased an iPhone 8GB eBay, which, contrary to its description, turned out to be a brick. Of course I complained, but I'm afraid a legal battle doesn't make much sense since it is impossible to prove that it wasn't me bricking the phone. Anyway, this is a different question.

It displayed the laggy "connect to iTunes/slide for emergency/iPhone needs to be repaired" I connected it to iTunes (v.7.6.1) on my Mac (OSX 10.4.11), iTunes gave me an error message, which asked me to insert my SIM card. I put the iPhone in DFU mode, iTunes recognized it and I restored to 1.1.4, which at the very end gave me the 1011 error message. I tried again, also with SW 1.1.1, 1.1.2 and 1.1.3, all with the same result.

-iLiberty+ recognizes the phone in all three modes of operation (normal, restore and DFU) but won't let me do anything.
-I don't have a IMEI nor an ECCID (all question marks)
-I do not know which bootloader version I have nor do I know how to find out
-The phone boots in all three modes, which, I have read, seems to be a good sign. "Normal mode" boot takes very long though (about one minute). It also shows the red flashing "empty" battery.

Now my options are:
a) simply wait&hope that this problem may be fixed. Some peoble have already done so, maybe SW 2.0, iFree or iLiveAgain will help. I would need guidance in any case since feel trying all methods presented in other cases would only produce a greater mess.
b) purchase a new CommBoard. This is costly, bears the risk of completely ruining the device altogether during the operation, and I am in fear that it won't do anything to the problem, respectively, that it'll break again.
c) resell it on eBay (as defect). Strangely enough, bricked iPhones sell for up to 260€. I mean, ~100€ loss compared to the price I got it for is a high price to pay for the temporary possession of a stylish paperweight, but probably little for a lesson for life. Maybe I should just take the money and be out of it?

I am desperate and thankful for any sort of advice.
What do you experienced iPhone modders think about this?

Thanks in advance,
kleinklein

Get on a mac...connect it to iTunes. Hold both power and home button until iTunes doesnt see it anymore than then let go the power button and hold the home button until Itunes recognizes it in DFU mode. I would then use Independence to kick it back into life. Use ZiPhone to unlock it in 1.1.4(try using 1.1.2 if its giving you issues) and then i would use iPwnage to really modify it. I would just try DFU mode and whatnot until it comes back to life, it'll work dont stress.

Thanks for the quick, encouraging response. You're right, iBricks wouldn't sell so expensive if there was no chance of getting them back.

I don't understand what you mean by "kicking it back into life" with iNdependence. How do I do that?

// update: I restored the iPhone to 1.1.4, gave me the infamous 1011 error, then started iNdependence. It says "iPhone in DFU mode connected" but doesn't let me do *anything at all* with it. All buttons are grey. Meh.

Once in DFU mode, the only way to get out of it is with an iTunes restore. If you're getting the error on a Mac, try and DFU on a PC.

okay, I will, but don't have access to a PC before tomorrow.
Nevertheless, plans and similiar experiences are highly appreciated.

I don't have access to a PC before tomorrow, but then I'll put it in normal mode. What's the point of this? Will iNdependence work only with a normally booted iPhone?

Anyhow, plans and similiar experiences are highly appreciated.

Go to hackint0sh site (software unlock section), look for those newest threads. You could find away to fix your iphone there.

@NewWayAround
I have been monitoring the latest developments in the Hackint0sh Forum very thoroughly and will be waiting until the release of the executable version of iFix1011 - which I hope will one day be, since the results of the first beta test weren't exactly successful and JSN1 has gotten a little quiet lately :/
Anyway, I hope the best for it and thank you very much for your (considerable) support and involvement in this topic.

@tahazahoor
I'm afraid I cannot do so before monday since I am not at home over the weekend and didn't take my iPhone with me. But I can't wait to try that out, sounds good. Thanks very much.

I promise I will (Monday). If it doesn't work I will try the other methods presented and post the results.
Thanks for the support, and sorry that I am kinda "out of action"... that really annoys me right now since so many are willing to help

Don't worry i still haven't come across a brick that cannot be fixed
It just takes a bit of trial and error and a lot of patience
The last one i fixed took me 3 days but now i know how to fix it, it takes 15 mins. Restore it and ziphone it, usually works, and if the restore fails try ibrkr to take it back to 1.02 and then shift restore it to 1.1.4 and ziphone it, you will be surprised at how easy it is to fix

No can do! iLiberty has all buttons greyed out, so I cannot perform any action! (with iPhone connected, twice restored unsuccessfully to 1.1.4, in normal mode)

@others: I learned to better keep my fingers off ZiPhone, if you recommend it I will give it a try, but only if I know exactly what to do. The program gives me a couple of options, I would appreciate a more accurate instruction than "ziphone it". No offense, I mean you are really the people helping ME, but experince taught me to be a chicken.

Anyway, thanks to everyone here (especially for giving hope ).

IMHO, iPhones are pretty hard to brick. Hopefully, this method works for you: How to Fix “Repair Needed” on the iPhone | The Daily Mac

BTW, does the iPhone have water damage?

Holy crap, the second page of this very thread with the last couple of posts has disappeared! I am not familiar to this forum and its software but that doesn't seem normal to me... :/

Am I stupid or do you also not see what I do not see?
