God didn't want it to be.
I have been walking through the streets and a nearby forest for 2 hours now to emotionally stabilize (literally!) and to get my head straight. Here's what happened.
I try to keep this short: I followed hibernian56's instruction precisely, though I wasn't able to upgrade to 2.0 in step 1 (error 1603 after "waiting for iPhone"). Believing that things couldn't get much worse in any case, I continued. In step 8, however, ZiPhone got stuck while the the iPhone's display was displaying "Reflashing Bootloader [1'55'']. I quit ZiPhone, and now the iPhone does not boot properly anymore: it shows the white apple logo for a few seconds, then display scrolling white text, repeating a line that's ending with "major: 2, minor: 0". Neither iTunes nor any other tool recognize it.I know well that my Phone is now in a state bejond repair, the bootloader's f*cked.
hibernian56, I don't blame you for anything, I did it at my own risk and I am sure it worked for you as described. But please, considering my story and for other users' sake, don't promote this method any longer.
So this is the end of the story, the final destination. This morning I had a broken phone which I could still sell for way over 250€. Now I have a broken phone that I can hardly sell for one tenth that amount. I must really put this into perspective: it's nothing like I crashed my dad's car, lost a finger, a hand, my eyesight or a relative. F*ck, it's 340€ overall, once I start working I'm going to earn that much in 2-3 days. The money's gone, It's all not that bad, and it's time to draw a line.

And still, accepting all this, I cannot describe how forcefully disappointment and sadness erupt inside me. I remember well that party back in 2005 when a guys asked me about mobile phones. I answered that I had no idea, but personally was waiting for the iPhone to come out. ****, that was TWO DAMN YEARS before that thing was even introduced! I read everything about it, checked out 3rd party apps without even owning one. Monitored its value on ebay and tried to figure out where, when and how to buy one the best. And this is how it had to end up. Even if I will own an iPhone one day, be it a legally purchased one, it'll probably never be the same again.
I asked my brother to pick it up, I cannot bear having it lying around here. (There you have it, I can't even use it as a paperweight anymore!) I'm not sure what I'll do with it. My options are (ascending by awesomeness
- Sell it as it is, no matter at what price.
- Sell it as parts. At least the touchscreen could bring a fraction of the money. (gets a bonus for reason)
- Let my brother keep it as a little design object. Would perfectly match his iBook G3 with broken Logicboard. Doesn't work for me, would drive me nuts.
- Kill it in a very flamboyant way (chainsaw, heavy hammer, flamethrower, run a car over it, ...) and upload the video on youtube.
- Throw it into the river Rhein from a very high bridge (also filmed). Like the diamond in "Titanic" thrown into the sea. Then at least it's gone.
- Throw it into a dense crowd, e.g. at a disco and let them have their fun with it.
- Tie it to a baloon so it may serve an unknown person somewhere in the world as a paperweight.
Gonna let you know. I won't make decisions today, but I'm sure as hell making myself a drink.
Thanks again for all the time you put into this. I'm done with it now.
Any last words to the iPhone, if only it could hear me? Oh yeah.
iHateYou!
