No contract required for 3G iPhone, $299 8GB and $399 16GB

edit: the user is now claiming it was a "typo", and that its simply $199 and $299 as we already knew, and of course AT&T will "penalize" anyone who doesn't activate within a certain time frame - which we've already known, but still don't know details.
Apple stores and AT&T stores are confirming the iPhone 3G will be sold at $299 for the 8GB and $399 for the 16GB when sold without activation. Good news for all the unlockers.
Activation prices will remain at $199 and $299, respectively.
Thanks, iKahuna, for the tip.

i still wish they'd give current iphone subscribers something in return, like $20 at the appstore or something.

I am an AT&T customer but i am unlocked and jailbroken, my question is with the new 3g iphone if i buy it without the service commitment will the 3g be optional and just keep using edge? I live in an area that has no 3g for about 100 miles so it would do me no good. thanks guys.

I don't believe that. Iphones went down to half their price for a newer better version? WITHOUT a contract!?

can't believe you posted this from someone that has 3 post, and then when someone questioned it you said you called and confirmed it with AT&T and apple? Sounds like you made it up for traffic to your website? and a typo would be like misspelling a word not a full statement.

Who is the source? Where is this in black and white, officially?
I write Mac only tutorials for the iPhone and own every model. My iPhones run on the following SIMs/networks: AT&T, GoPhone, H2O, O2, SimpleMobile, T-Mobile and Verizon.

Right.
Agreed, its lame. I had called my Apple store at International Plaza in Tampa and they said it was $199 and $299 with a penalty if you didn't activate, which we already heard. Looks like the member was wrong, I edited the statement and apologized. Has nothing to do with traffic - the user is also known in the IRC rooms, not just on the board.
Source was listed on first post, first time. Has proven false, we've updated the post - the guy apparently doesn't know what's up, and that's the last time he's trusted.
Apologies, folks.
Moved to Chit-Chat as its proved false.Last edited by Kyle Matthews; 06-26-2008 at 02:56 PM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost
