Goes straight to voicemail in full bar service area
I have searched around and have not found anything on this.
I've had my phone for a decent amount of time, 3 months to be exact. My issue is I have talked to a good amount of people who when they "finally" get through they say they have been trying a few times, but it just goes to voicemail. It even happens when I am in full-bar service areas so I was wondering if this happened to anyone else?
AT&T said it could be a bad SIM card, so they replaced it, but it is still happening. Thanks.

Two reasons that may be the answer to your problem:
1. Full bars does not mean that your cell tower has enough channels to handle your call. If a tower is full the call will go to VM...
2. Do you have your iPhone set to fetch your email every so often over the cellular network? If so, every data call will trigger incoming calls to go to VM. If this is your case, then try reducing the frequency you check you email or switch to the iPhone 3G that allows simultaneous data & voice.

I was just having the same problem with my wife's jailbroken iphone 2g. Just turn off push data under settings/accounts and you should be reciveing calls again.

I have this problem in the UK also. I phoned O2 and the solutions seem to be:
1. turn off 3G when you don't need it
2. turn off VM and then turn on again
3. Reboot the phone
These are an either/or list...you don't have to do all three!
I've written to customer services about this and a number of issues i have. I don't really want to turn off 3G on a 3G iphone

Sorry to raise this again , but....
As of two days ago, after 9 months daily use, I have now got the same problem. If EDGE is active all calls go straight to answer phone. If its off phone works as normal but i get no push data - no lockinfo updates etc...
I have read everything on web about this but there must be a solution.
i have done some tests and found that If i have a wifi connection ON i can have EDGE on and everything works fine. I suggest that the WIFI is being used by phone for everything effectively blocking the EDGE connection. So when wifi is OFF something on my phone is requesting a data connection constantly, but what?
I have a iPhone original on Virgin sim Uk unlocked 3.1.2 via redsn0w. usual selection of cydia hacks installed. I dont want to try fresh unlock as all posts on internet say that does not fix it.
I have just tried a official o2 iphone sim and the problem didnt occure. Put Virgin sim back in and as above.Last edited by rwilts; 01-30-2010 at 08:55 AM. Reason: update

Update - Solved
In case its of any use to anyone else I have solved my problem.
As suspected something was maintaining the data connection. it was ' Weather Icon' that somehow had become set at updating every minute. (now set to 6 hours!)
Why O2 sim was better at managing the conflict I dont know but happy that I now receive calls and can access data when needed.

Where do I check the setting on the weather to see how often it is updating the data? Didn't see it in settings or within the weather icon. Going crazy and have to find the problem. In case anyone reads this and has any other ideas for my 2g, 3.0, jailbroken, unlocked on Cable & Wireless/Lime (Caribbean) and already have email so it is not on "push" and advanced to "fetch", deleted some apps that ppl said it could be (ebay, genious bar said 2 were not working properly and are also gone). PLEASE someone help!!! This is maddening and I use for biz.

It was a third party app called weather icon. Used by Lockinfo and others to give that info on screen. If you have this installed its under 'settings'. Scroll down.

Thanks for the reply- I thought you meant the weather icon that was automatically on the first page so I don't have that app. My phone goes straight to vmail even when it is sitting with full bars, I am not using it, not in sleep mode, deleted possible apps I read could cause an issue, push is off - still no luck. Today I am going to try a new sim but is there anything else short of resetting anyone can recommend that I haven't read about yet?

This is an iPhone problem. All of my iPhones have always done this. Worst thing is O2 UK don't tell you if someones rung and NOT left a message.
I have tested this thoroughly and it makes no difference with any of my phones or any apps. It just happens, randomly.
