I believe they did it so you would have to buy their headphones.
In return, Apple make more money =D

Apple didnt do it to make more money. You get earphones in the box, they did for the iconic i brand to stay true with the iphone, i.e. the white earphone and dangling cable look.

But Apple also knows that most people hate the stock headphones (hence this thread), and they know you will want to buy a different pair. So if they control that "market", they make more money.

I bought an adapter for mine... It cost me $4.50 total, from some guy in Australia.

I could see the marketing behind it, as well as the peace of mind function.

they put it far in closer to the board for a good reason: the headphone jack module would not be so prone to breaking off the circuit board when people yank their earphones out the socket. If it was further up, it would be more susceptible to damage because it would be further away from the board
be easier for it to snap off. Think of it like trying to break short pencil; its harder than breaking a long one. And if Apple wanted you to buy their products only, why would they use a standard 3.5mm socket?

you know the jack is attached to the board via a long flex cable right? And the headphone jack is mounted directly to the back housing right?

This positioning has absolutely nothing to do with minimizing the change of it being snapped off the board. lol.

Just an FYI regarding the adapter; I have a set of Skullcandy Smokin' Buds that I love, but don't fit the iPhone. (Side note: Staples sells these for $19.99, and they are TOTALLY worth the price. They were even $9.99 on Black Friday, which is a great deal.) Anyway, after getting my iPhone and finding that they don't fit, I went on the hunt for an adapter. Found an eBay seller (accstation) who sells the adapter, a travel charger, AND a car charger for the iPhone for $1.99 + $6.99 s/h = $8.98 total. That breaks down to basically $3 per item, totally worth it. The headphone adapter works great; the travel charger lets me use my base with it, and that leaves the detachable USB cord that came with the iPhone free for me to use to connect my iPhone to my laptop when I'm modding, and the car charger is something I was looking at getting anyway.

Link to auction for all three items (which is what I bought)

    He also sells just the headphone adapter for $0.49 + $4.94 s/h = $5.43

Honestly, though, for only $3.55 more, I don't know why people wouldn't buy all three items and get JUST the 3.5mm headphone adapter. I mean, everyone can use a car charger, right?

I am in no way affiliated with that seller nor do I get anything by linking to his eBay stuff. Just passing along what I found.
