you cannot store contacts in itunes, you need a third party program that SYNCS (not sinks) with it. Such as Microsoft outlook, microsoft address book etc.

How will I know if the contacts/calender have saved successfully in itunes/outlook? If I upgrade to 2.2.1 without syncing 1st, will all my contacts be deleted? thanks

If you have a Mac it is easy.

    Plug in Iphone
    Open Itunes
    Click on your phone
    click info tab
    Sync ( all Contacts )
    Bottem Right Click Sync

It may look like it isn't doing anything but it is actually copying all of you phone contacts to your apple addressbook on your computer. Once the sync is complete unplug your phone click on your address book and see if they made it there.

Or you can just backup your phone, all contacts are stored in the backup.

As dallan said click the info tab and look for where it says sync contacts. Tick the box and choose outlook. Then sync phone. Contacts should then be in outlook address book.

Personally I've never used a mac but as far as I know iTunes is the same on both formats.

When you click the info tab in iTunes can you get the screen that hives you the options to sync photos from, sync contacts from etc?

Yes check contacts then from the drop down box if you have one select outlook, then apply if necessary and sync. As long as it's the same mac you always use then the only thing that will change is the contacts in outlook it shouldn't remove them from your phone only copy them.

But the problem is I installed new os on my Mac n it erased everything, so I don't have any back of my contacts. For some reason(it use to ) it is not recognizing my phone.
Before when I use to any new phone to iTunes it use to ask me do u wanna as a new iPhone or the old( my) iPhone but not anymore.

In that case you may need to click on authorise computer first. Should work after that.
