Someone told you wrong. The best thing to do is to be on 1.1.4 b/c that's what all the apps and updates are written for. If you are on anything other than 1.1.4 you need to RESTORE in iTunes and start over fresh with iLiberty or iDemocracy to re-jailbreak and unlock (if necessary)
