News item:
On Thursday, utility maker Micromat released Syphone, a free SMS utility for the iPhone. the program "lets you view, save, and back up your SMS messages", which goes a step beyond the iPhone's current feature set via the storage layout of the device.
The application itself installs directly onto your Mac and "does not alter the iPhone in any way," which may convince users looking to avoid unlocking or jailbreaking their units and thus keeping their warranty intact.

Too bad their ftp download link isn't working...
All the best software in the world is useless if people can't access it.

Downloaded it - it does nothing.
Just opens up a window and then sits there - have to kill the syphone process to get shut of it.

Looks like they fixed the FTP link.
I downloaded it, ran it, and it had some messages from a long time ago, messages that have since been deeted on the iphone.
The interface is not very clear about HOW to pull sms messages off the phone though.
All in all, the application is now sitting in the trash bin.
It's a good idea, poor GUI implementation.
'nuff said.

The program doesn't actually take the messages off the phone, it accesses the backup files from iTunes. All the stuff on your iPhone (SMS, Call logs, notes) are backed up each time you sync.

just SSH onto your phone and download /private/var/mobile/Library/SMS/
... you don't need any extra tools for that

I remember using a app called SMS2Mail or something like that which allowed you to email yourself all your texts. Not sure if that's what you're looking for though.

I think iPhone Browser and a few other apps stopped working with the release of iTunes 9. Myself, as well as others, have had issues with such programs freezing up immediately after starting.

PhoneView for iPhone and iPad - iPhone Disk Mode, SMS, Voicemail, Call History, Music, Photos, Notes Access - Ecamm Network
This is an awesome thing, I backed up my texts no bother and took about 2 secs. You can find a free copy in the usual way, but if you want to try the demo and see if it works then the above link will do that for you

Take the easy way ...
After reading too many posts about how to save SMS using fairly complicated ways, I figured I really need to recommend you guys this neat program I offer. It's called iTwin and I invented it because I noticed that quite a lot of iPhone users might find another Back-Up program apart from iTunes useful. Not only does it back up SMS, contacts, calendar entries and notes, it also displays them on your Windows computer in the same way the iPhone does it. Even on a Mac it works if you run Parallels or VirtualBox. Many more features like export and print are also included. Feel free to check it out: www.i-twin.de/en
So long

Cool thread. I'm looking into picking up one of these programs. I also just found this other one for $9 bucks that saves your text messages to your computer. Looks like it works for both windows and mac. Anyone used this one? iPhone Tools - Decipher Media
