when you buy the iphone
ok this might sound funny but most of you guys here are from the states i guess so when you go to the apple store to buy an iphone do you have to sign up on a contract with at&t before you pay for it or can you buy it and sign a contract at a later time?

The Apple store does not sell phone plans for at&t. Only at&t
so you can buy a iPhone and only sign your credit card receipt!

ok so you are under no obligation to take out an at&t contract.
so if i was asking 1 of you guys from the forum to buy 1 for me and post it to ireland you could do it without being tied to a contract?

This is the first mobile phone here in the states that does it this way. All carriers usually make you buy the phone and a contract at the same time.

well that was silly of apple and at&t i think.

Most of the time when you buy a phone through a carrier they have lowered the price of the phone if you sign a contract. Apple wouldnt allow AT&T to sell the phone at a subsidized price, so thus the method in place.
Also I think Apple wanted to make the process easier of you being able to go over plan details and everything in the privacy of your own home, without a sales person forcing their hand.

They are trying to make it easier and more user freindly
When the Iphone arrives in England and Germany on November 09th 2007 it will be the same game
If you are importing stuff from North America remember that you have to pay VAT plus 7% EU importation tax that 25% in UK also would you trust somebody in an online forum?
If your looking for fast data (3G) then wait until next year when a 2nd Generation Iphone is released

I bought mine at the Apple Store If the AT&T guys say you need to get a contract there just tell them your well aware of how it works and you activate at home, and you'd be more then happy to pull up the information.
