More info needed. Unlock? or Jailbreak?
    Mac or PC
    Which iPad?
You wouldn't want to sync with the original owners PC as it would put all his data back on it.
    Sync with your own computer.
There is a Jailbreak guide at the top left, drop down menu on any page.

there is a tutorial online that can show you how to unlock the passcode. you will need to use ifunbox (or shsh into it) to change a few lines of code. its been over a year since i had to do that for my son's iphone3gs. he no longer passcodes it and uses the android lock instead. google for it. i had to.

If he doesn't know the pass code he should just ask his friend - unless, of course, it wasn't his friend's in the first place...
He who asks a question looks foolish for 5 minutes. He who doesn't ask a question remains foolish forever.

People often want to find out what is on stolen phones. The people willing to use stolen phones have no scruples. If it was his friends phone why would he not have restored it to erase all his personal details in the first place - unless it's to 'sell' the apps that are on it - which you are not allowed to do.

Not necessarily - but does look suspicious.

I prefer not to give answers to people that I have reason to believe might not be legit.
I have no problem helping anyone that can give me a reason, but helping someone that has not? Why?

Why are we assuming the worst?

    He could mean carrier unlock.

The pc it was synced with could of been formatted or even broken.

He may have not been online since asking the question to give his reasons.

Why are we bumping month old threads?!

They aren't assuming the worst, they just think he may mean something else...
