1.1.3/1.1.4 SMS popup strings change?

I was poking through my iPhone's filesystem today and editing .string files. I am on 1.1.3 Windows Vista, etc. I would like to know if anybody has had any luck in openng a 1.1.3 .strings file. I tried using the conversion site, but it says the file is invalid (the /System/Library/CoreServices/Springboard.app/English.lproj/SpringBoard.strings file). I would also like to know if anybody knows how to, or has any idea how to change the behavior of the popup window so that when you press "close", the message remains unread, as I hate this feature.
