Thread: Widget Weather

EDIT: I just realized that "extraLocCity" still has a value. That might be a better alternative when "regular" city is blank rather then Postal Code - the way I have my mod setup now.
Thanks, Marty. Yes, I would agree with you that Postal Code doesn't offer much.. extraLocCity would be a great alternative. It would seem for more rural areas in Canada where you are - Yahoo reports an extraLocCity even when there's no city name reported.

This widget.xml will allow me to build a case in my 'auto-infer' city method for such cases.

As soon as I get a few more 'cases' of how the XML comes out from non-US sources -- I'm gonna release this series of IF/ELSE IF cases code for all modders to add to their WW mods for when they want to add more specificty or scrolling options for place names in their widgets.

Several of you use one single line in your mods for a place name. COOL.. But I know most of you know how make text fade from one thing to another or even three things -- like Ian does for MoonRise-MoonSet/Sunrise-Sunset times.. My code would allow you to build cases for what will show in the various fades between info that appears in #city. Could be a neat mod.

But I agree that extraLocCity is almost always filled in. In fact I've never seen it blank in my US travels so far (4 states). The only one that very often has ' n u l l ' is extraLocNeighborhood... and now you're telling me that in rural areas of Canada you often see 'city' and 'name' blank - but extraLocCity is not. That's a good sign. It means we get SOME kind of PLACE name for any area we travel.

Because this 'place naming accuracy' interest me, and the XML is a kind of puzzle AND because I'm eager to use this project as my 'java coding learning project' I'll be doing a lot of homework on what all the XML tells us about location and then make the code available for all. Aspect of the code are already in the one I released. But I have a version 3-Yahoo and version 3-Google now.. Will release soon.

    FYI:
Yahoo and Google both have free feeds for place info. WeatherUnderground is very good too but you need to 'get' their FREE API.. Not practical for free widgets.. But I'm gonna toy with that too.

    EDIT:
Marty - the extraLocCity name in your XML is "Tay".. As I looked it up on Google it's the TOWNSHIP OF TAY.. extraLocCity is exclusively Townships in US too.. What I found interesting was this line in the Wikipedia article-
The township of Tay comprises the villages and rural hamlets of: Ebenezer, Elliots Corners, Melduf, Mertzs Corners, Ogden's Beach, Old Fort, Paradise Point, Port McNicoll, Riverside, Sturgeon Bay, Triple Bay Park, Vasey, Victoria Harbour, Waubaushene and Waverley.
Wow.. It's a darn shame that Yahoo can't specify all those towns/villages.. The XML also reports latitude and longitude LONG numbers under <extraLocName>. The Google localization feed I'm using, a JSON call, gets its name from latitude and longitude (as WW does, of course).. but I'm gonna plug in those coordinates and see if I can see the actual TOWN/VILLAGE you were in today WITHIN The Township of Tay.

Hey all. Quick teaser video for something I've been working on. Switch XML Widget Weather data for Accuweather data at the touch of a button:

Still needs work. Will share when done.

    Looks amazing bro..

Hey -- little update on my work with your XML.. Weather Underground was INDEED able to pinpoint where you were better than Yahoo or Google.. Yahoo & Google both were only able to pinpoint you to Tay Township (which isn't quite right) in Simcoe County (which IS right). But WU was able to pinpoint you were in the small village of Port Severn! (which according to Wiki isn't even really in Tay Township - but in Severn Township). So that was a fun little journey. Thanks to input from Rasputin007 and Dacal I'm able to grab data from Yahoo (myLocation feed), Yahoo Widget Weather feed, Accuweather Feed, Google Feed and WeatherUnderground's feed. WU and Google are nearly tied for first in terms of pinpoint city accuracy - with WU winning slightly in the most rural areas like where you travel and a few others I've tested.. with WW's Yahoo feed from Apple's Weather.app in a very close 3rd.. ..

We have submitted the tweak to Cydia today.
Same version as current but after it is live we will be updating the package from there.

Once it's live you will want to uninstall your current version (Cydia/Manage Packages)
Then install the official one from ModMyi repo.

No new news on updates of the current package at this time.

It's the same package on MMI so cydia knows to overwrite the one everyone will already have installed, so no need to uninstall the current version just to get updates. MMI saved a whole load of pain right there!

I installed the MMI repo version, but is this how it's supposed to unpack ?

It does seem to work though.

It did it on both my phones.

I had the version from your repo installed, I uninstalled it, resprung, and installed from the MMI repo.

    Pretty weird.

If I unpack the .deb, it look like this.

I uninstalled and installed the modmyi one.

    No issues.
