Thread: Widget Weather

    The next big step will be implementing it into UniAW6.5!

    When you want a good base to go off might as well use one that's tried and tested and just works.
    Dacal is the best around when it comes to weather api's and his work on making the GPS/woeid option.
    All the basic element requests and the location option functions don't really change. Everything else added to that is really the only difference.

    I can tell you Dacal loves the way this implements on the phone. Big reason why he got involved and set up a base to read the xml file. The format was also his request as we initially had a different document type. xml was explained to be easier so it was implemented.

    Yes, like D said, Dacal has already set the standard for the use of the tweak. It's all that I have been using myself for months.

    So then - for our older widgets - the transfer to using the new tweak will be too much of a jump to go to? So it'll be akin to the early GPS widgets versus the ones after myLocation? Total rewrite - most of the early GPS wids were abandoned.. ??
    Here to help if I can. If I can't I know someone who can!

    If you're still asking for an easy way to convert another widget there's not.
    You rewrite the html/CSS to work with the element names in this format.
    It's not difficult but there is no easy way like just switching out the javascript.

    Really you should be thinking forward for what's new that could be created using this method.
    Your older widgets will still work if you want to use them. It's not that big of a deal. If the creator wants to update to use the tweak great, if not they are working already. Remember this was not done as a replacement just as an alternative. In my case it's an alternative ill be sticking to for many reasons.

    Just an example for you, this widget in the pic was gps/woeid.
    In less than 10 minutes I took the style information and put it into Widget Weather format and done. Old gps widget now a Widget Weather version.

    Put it this way Grant. I had a whole setup UNIAW and my scrolling pano walls. By the time I got a chance to try this out these guys already had a bunch of great bases to work from, LS, SB and iWidgets. I was able to take one Durben had done up using this new tweak for weather info and pretty much had it running and looking almost exactly like UNIAW (minus the balloons and astronaut) in about an hour. RKO has one, Marty and Chevy have one each as well in their styles. What I am trying to get at is these guys have laid the groundwork already for new widgets to be made on top of which can run exactly like the ones we have now. So don't think of it in terms of having to rewrite the old ones. Think of it in terms of we can easily recreate the ones we have now and make even better ones in the future.

    Yup.. Agreed!! If it takes, you, D, 10 minutes and takes Simon, an hour to convert an old widget to new format - then it will take my 2 hours.. LOL!! I just hope when it releases - a tutorial for conversion is made.. "I" can study the code and probably create the tutorial myself. I'm often called upon for reverse engineering models and tutorials made from that process - in the work I do. So hopefully I'll GET IT..

    PS.. And I'm STILL hurt - that a rank 'noob' to modding like Simon was picked before me for the beta team..

    But Grant, you already answered your own query about Simon being used over you. Only took Simon one hour that will take you 2 hours. It had nothing to do with the amount of time it takes, but had everything to the understanding of the code. Same reason Marty was brought in. Sorry to hurt your feelings.

    Besides, we are testing the final version now! Just got it! It's looking good!

    Grant, not to stir anything but maybe it's because u get caught up on labels like noob, novice, veteran, etc. What metric are u using when defining people in these terms? Simon seems more than a "noob" to me but I don't think in these terms.

    I haven't made any mods and I was invited to beta test this tweak. Durben, King, Marty, Chevy, Dacal, and others more than make up the knowledge necessary to impact this tweak. The rest is just about how u interact with others. Its not only about what knowledge u can bring to the table. I'm proof of that.

    Ps. @King. New version is updating much faster. Looking good.

    I believe you're thinking in your head that its a lot different from current weather widgets.
    It's really not. All the document get by ID's are relatively the same.
    Only difference is we do not send/receive to the internet, it's written to pull data from the xml
    Once you have the main javascript it's really as simple as seeing what is used to name the element and write the html/CSS accordingly.

    city is still city
    desc is still desc
    temp is still temp

    The document get by id is pretty much the same. It's the way the object is handled after the fact in order to translate the info from the xml file that is different.

    You're over thinking it. It's actually just as easy to use as a gps widget for the most part. If not easier

    Ah Krima.. Always the encourager. King tells me I'm not smart enough. You tell me I'm not cool enough. Ah.. the luv..

    Ian found me valuable enough to be on the original beta for UniAW. Guess my "get along skills" worked for him.. Lol! Truth be told its all about "who ya know".. the cliques, etc.. .. (Jk.., .. but not really - but that's like real life too - so no complaints)..

    Should be fun to toy with!

    Tolerating someone and enjoying someone are two completely different things Grant ( Jk... .. but not really)

    I never said u weren't cool enough. Again that's how u define people, that's not how I do. U said this about me before that's its who u know. It's a little insulting that u think its just because I know someone and not because I may bring a unique perspective to a team. But I probably don't do that so u may be right, it's just who u know.

    What's weird is that King invited me and I hate that guy.

    This is to be used as a TEST only. IT IS NOT AN UPDATING VERSION. It is using a copy of my xml file ouput from the tweak.
    This can be used to see the scripts and how they function as well as be used to make a widget that will work with the tweak once its released.

    The example above that is being provided is a slightly modified version of the base lockscreen that will be installed with/along with the tweak when its ready.
    Presently the javascript will read the xml file included in the theme folder. This can be changed in the main.js later to work with the tweak. (see pic)

    In case the pic is not clear enough, to later enable use with the tweak this is what the script should look like:

    Code:
    function updateWeather() {
    //To enable with the tweak remove the double slash in front of jQuery below

    jQuery.get('file:///private/var/mobile/Documents/widgetweather.xml', function(data) {

    //This is for testing only. To use as a widget with the tweak add a double slash in front of jQuery below along with the step above

    //jQuery.get('widgetweather.xml',function(data) {

    This is being posted for modders to basically get a head start on making widgets that will work with the tweak which is now very close to release.
    There are notes included in the main.js and configurable options are in the Config.js
    This is not meant to be a styled lockscreen to use but can be We just wanted to have a base that had all available information showing.

    JUST TO NOTE AGAIN, THIS IS NOT THE TWEAK, BUT A WIDGET THAT CAN BE USED AS A BASE TO MAKE OTHER WIDGETS
