Thread: Widget Weather

    Grant, we were well aware of this. Actually if Ian had the time and could have joined us in our round tables, he would have learned all this weeks ago. But he has been busy and I fully understand.

    So please stop putting out you negativity and self importance when you really don't know the situation.

    How did we get this far without you. TBH, you have not brought forward one issue that we are not aware of and working on.

    But thanks for your input.

    HOW TO HAVE OFFLINE MODE TO DEBUB THE WIDGET

    It's an exemple, with the code below, the city becomes red if you are offline.
    You can easily do anything else.

    In main.js, at the beginning of the file, add a new variable :

    var updateFileTimer = "";
    var updateTimer;
    In updateClock, remove the "var" word before "currentTime" (first line) :

    function updateClock() {
    currentTime = new Date();
    In updateWeather() function, add the lines in red (just before the " }", be careful to preserve this quote) :

    updateFileTimer = obj.updatetimestring;

    obj.lastupdate = obj.updatetimestring.split(' ');
    if (ampm == true) {
    updateTimer = new Date([obj.lastupdate[0].split('-')[1], obj.lastupdate[0].split('-')[2], obj.lastupdate[0].split('-')[0]].join('/') + " " + obj.lastupdate[1] + " " + obj.lastupdate[2]);
    } else {
    updateTimer = new Date([obj.lastupdate[0].split('-')[1], obj.lastupdate[0].split('-')[2], obj.lastupdate[0].split('-')[0]].join('/') + " " + obj.lastupdate[1]);
    }

    if ( currentTime.getTime() - updateTimer.getTime() > obj.interval*60*1000 ) {
    obj.offline = true;
    document.getElementById("city").style.color= "red";
    } else {
    obj.offline = false;
    }

    dealWithWeather(obj);
    } else {
    if ( currentTime.getTime() - updateTimer.getTime() > obj.interval*60*1000 ) {
    obj.offline = true;
    document.getElementById("city").style.color = "red";
    }

    }
    }).fail(function() {
    document.getElementById("xmlupdate").innerHTML = "No XML file !";
    });
    In dealWithWeather(), add the line in red (to revert back, when new conditions are loaded) :

    var cityname = obj.city;
    switch (UseExtraLocation) {
    case "city":
    if ((obj.extraLocCity != null) && (obj.extraLocCity != "")) { cityname = obj.extraLocCity; }
    break;
    case "neighborhood":
    if ((obj.extraLocNeighborhood != null) && (obj.extraLocNeighborhood != "")) { cityname = obj.extraLocNeighborhood; }
    else if ((obj.extraLocCounty != null) && (obj.extraLocCounty != "")) { cityname = obj.extraLocCounty; }
    break;
    }
    if (obj.offline == false) { document.getElementById("city").style.color = ""; }
    document.getElementById("city").innerHTML = cityname;

    In case i have forgotten something, link to an updated Widget (nothing really new than the one in post #1, don't expect slideshow or timedwalls, it's just a debug version).

    PS : i forget to mention : widget weather tweak timer works the same way as the widgets i have coded for myLocation (private joke) => when the phone is in sleep mode, the timer is stopped. When the phone is wake up, the tweak checks the time it is and updates the XML if the update interval is reached. But sometimes, after you wake up your phone, it may take few seconds to do that.

    So you can have a case, when you wake up your phone, where the city turns red (the javascript code starts again and sees that the XML has not been updated) and turns white (day) / blue (night) 20 seconds later. It's normal.

    I did not see that again, but i suppose it may happen. If it happens often, maybe a good idea to adjust a little the obj.interval that is checked and increase it by 20 seconds.

    It was discussed in the circle, but it was discovered that switching quickly back and forth was causing a safe mode. So instead of supplying a work around that may cause a bigger issue, we left it out. Sometimes the cure is worse than the disease.

    If you set the Location option to manual you can leave location services on for weather without them running in the background. Location service will then only kick in when you open the weather app or pull down NC.
    Otherwise it's off
    You'll likely see better results.

    Hi Ian
    Here's a quick blurb about this from Stephen

    "0 indicates the native weather query was successful. I'm not sure what the other numbers mean other than query failed. usually cause after a reboot and the cell/wifi hasn't kicked in yet and its trying to update the weather."

    Seems exactly what is happening to you after you exit airplane mode.
    Why the delay for an extended period of time before it kicks back in we don't know.

    I did try airplane mode last night for about 3hrs and when turning it off my lockscreen updated after the unlock/lock.

    Next time you have it on airplane mode, after you turn on and it doesn't update (if happens again) send us the log file to pass along.

    *Just a tip, if you have iCleaner (Cydia app) when you run it, it deletes the log. If logging is still enabled it starts at that point again. Easy to clean up the weather.log and have just the latest info there.

    Yes you did. My experience with the tweak seems to be different than others.
    I don't have issues. On any location mode and at 15 min interval my weather updates always.
    I also have not had a safe mode like others in our beta circle. This is not on any specific version, this has been for quite a few versions going well back from release.

    So not saying "as if it were new" saying it doesn't happen to me.

    Another interesting phenomenon I'm observing - I'm sure it's by design - but Constant mode pulls different data to the widget than manual does. When in Constant mode I often see one name in Weather.app (after refreshed not before) and a different city in any WW widget. Is that correct?

    Also it seems when I have Constant set on - weather.app only pulls County names - not city. I'm in West Chester right now. WW widgets say West Chester (proper city) but Weather.app says "Chester" ( which is the County West Chester is in). I remember Durben and King saying "we've taken over" the Weather.app. Could the "takeover" make Weather.app show a different aspect of the feed? When I switch to manual mode the Weather.app's next update goes back to showing the city name, itself , and city name ('name') in what it reports to the WW XML. The moment I switch Constant back on - Weather.app starts showing only "extraLocCounty" data. Interesting.

    Hi King,

    Since everyone is experiencing either no issue at all, or different issues, I would appreciate if you could explain to me how exactly is the widget supposed to work, so that I understand it.

    I'm running Durben's ios7 lockscreen for the last couple of days, and at the bottom of the screen it mentions the last update.

    Until about an hour ago, although I had set the update interval to 10 min., as I mentioned in my previous posts, it updated whenever it wanted, EVEN if the phone was asleep. For example, I hadn't use my phone from 7 pm to 8 pm. When I pressed the home button at lets say 8:05, the lockscreen mentioned that the last update was at 7:30.

    So, is it supposed to run and update the weather in the background? Because I recall Durben saying that the tweak isn't sending or receiving when the phone is asleep.

    Furthermore, during the last hour I tried to experiment a little bit. I remembered that I had "forecast" installed, which was set to update every 15 minutes. So I uninstalled it...

    The result was/is that the tweak isn't updating in the background. However, having it set to 10 min. interval, whenever I awake my phone it updates instantly, as long as the 10 min. have passed! I also checked the log file and noticed that it has nothing to do with my previous log files (when I had forecast installed). It's trying to update, it creates the xml file, it keeps trying to update for a couple of minutes after my phone sleeps (I guess it happens until the phone's radios are turned off), and then it retries as soon as I press my home button. If I do it within 10 min., it won't update. If I do it after 10 minutes, it will update instantly which is great!

    Is THIS the way it's supposed to work? If so, then the issue was "forecast" tweak, and it would be great if anyone else could test and confirm that.

    Many thanks in advance.

    P.S.: My previous logs were a constant effort of updating, regardless of the phone's state (sleep or awake) and unlimited denies because of the update interval (which were insufficient).
