Thread: Widget Weather

  1. #201
Just so we are clear, there isn't a Native option. You are confusing this with the Native method of getting weather from the libweather tweak.

This tweak is 100% different. We hijack and hook into iOS to pull the data that we need. Every mode uses GPS to get your location. Is there another way to do this? Not that I know of.

I'm just not sure what the big deal is here. When we release it, you can just test it and see. You may not like the data you get no matter what we say upfront. Then you may not want to rewrite all your widgets either.

We encourage questions, but your questions about what the retrieved data will be for your specific area is not productive here. Nothing that we say is going to matter and nothing that you say will change it. Everyone will just have to test it and decide if it is for them or not.

I want to be clear that we are encouraging questions, but we don't have a clear answer as to the exact data that will be reported based on an exact position, unless we are there. Once released everyone can test and decide. Thanks.

I'm sorry King.. My question isn't clear... Let me try again. One hard thing here is in trying to eliminate the well established term 'Native' from the question asking - when before, now and after this tweak - Native is a term Apple uses to refer to anything native to the phone. So when I'm using the term "native" I'm simply talking about iOS's own use of the Weather.app for data. Last time I checked that term is still 'Native'. I understand why Widget Weather wants to distance itself from the "Native Weather Widgets" - But I simply don't know what other term to use for the process the new tweak uses when it's creating or getting data FROM an xml of the same data iOS's own Weather.app uses.. So I guess that's how I'll term it going forward - but I think it's an overreach to try and eliminate the term 'Native' from the discussion.

So-- in a screen shot on this thread about 10 pages ago - Durben or Krima or one of you posted a shot of a preferences window that let you choose how the Widget Weather would get location. Has that changed? In that window was an option for GPS and another for Native (Weather.app xml). And maybe one other.. I forget now. When you guys gave me an explanation then - many of you said you were okay with simply having to put your phone into sleep and then wake it up again for the phone to update city.. when in Weather.app localization mode. I was worried about no autoupdate - as to this day my iPhone 5's Weather.app still doesn't auto update. So Widget Weather will obviously have that same limitation if it's based on Weather.app. Unless your amazing dev found a way around that. Then he'd be ALL our hero!!

But you told me at that time to 'simmer down' - because you chose to leave IN the GPS localization in our current widgets as an option too in the new tweak's preferences for localization. Durben alludes to this a few posts ago - when he talks about 'If one of the two settings' doesn't get you the proper city you can still add back the "neighborhood' code too to any widget you want to use it in. So my question is - when the main preference of Widget Weather is set to GPS rather than Weather.app (Native) mode - since the same localization wrong city name will likely exist as it does now with our location.js method of grabbing city name - my question was - was CityGPS false/true left in the new tweak itself - or is it something that would have to be written in any widgets using the new tweak?

I hope that clears up my question. My question is a simply 'coding' question -- not an ask for any guarantee of my city showing up properly. My guess is 90% of your users will be fine with the Weather.app localization and simply using a respring or sleep/wake double clik to update city. But my question was for the rest of us that will prefer to use GPS mode, as it's implemented now, that with the $ajax timeout cache turned off, updates city instantaneously without any other keystrokes.

    Thanks...

Thanks for any thoughts you can offer.
Wanted to test the neighborhood option based off your city.
    I can't plug in a lat/long.

    This woeid returns Flourtown
Which is likely what the GPS will pull for you.

The switch (second one I have if a city is wrong and neighborhood is "null") uses the GPS to find an additional city which shows Whitemarsh.

    Either of those correct?

Same question like before, does your weather app on local settings give you a correct city name?

Well apparently you have not been paying attention. I would have to say that the dev is also a hero as you've put it. You are still hung up on the way that the Native Weather worked. There is not a Native option. There are 4 options GPS, semi, manual and fixed.

    Fixed:
You enter your woeid and you get weather for that location only.

    Manual:
It only updates when you access the stock (native) weather either from the app or notification center.

    Semi:
This method updates based on whether or not your position has changed and only during the set intervals. It also updates when the stock app has been accessed. Think GPS on demand.

    GPS:
This is full gps mode. It works similar to using sig change on in the myLocation app. Think full on GPS weather widget!

We have explained this a few times. Please let's not keep going here. We are not dependent on the stock app. We control the stock app and get our data from the same source by using the built in features that are already there in iOS.

Geeze, how many times and how many ways can this be explained to this guy. This is why I suggested to just be patient and wait when it's released and all these questions will be answered.

It's like trying to explain a personal experience to someone. At some point u have to just through your hands up and say, "you will understand when u go through this".

Just to clarify what King said, especially in regards to this one:

    Manual:
It only updates when you access the stock (native) weather either from the app or notification center.

This is only to update location. The weather info for whatever location your in as well as whatever location method you use will always update at its specified interval.

In Summary: Is this tweak better than the current my location method? Yes. Why? Who gives a ****, it's better. I went from Bermuda to Atlanta, then to Orlando and my widgets using new tweak had no issues updating location (I use the full gps setting King spoke of above). The mylocation widgets I use all had a hiccup or two updating location.

After integration into my project it has worked perfectly, as expected, without having to revise any functionality. All weather data you could want is put in a very convenient place for access including update frequency, so you can just check the data as frequently as it's updated without wasting memory constantly checking for changes.
By using data from the iPhone's weather app there's no need to even use woeid's since the app reliably tracks the weather at your location for you.
There really isn't much to question about this tweak and while I write natively, there will be examples on using the tweak bundled with it to understand how to use the tweak with your own HTML widget

Thanks Durben! You're the only one really interested in answering my technical questions. And you did perfectly! With CityGPS=true I get Whitemarsh. With CityGPS=false I get Flourtown. I just want that same functionality in the new tweak. And it seems like that's what it offers. Thank you so much for giving me that "preview". :-)

I don't know why everybody else is interested in posturing and trying to put me in my place. What I asked was such a simple question that has not been dealt with clearly before. King is right, in that an explanation of Semi, Manual and GPS has been explained before. I don't want anything to do with Semi mode as it will have the same problems updating location as the weather.app (native) does. I just wanted to make sure that the GPS localization functionality had a choice for the two different localization methods that are currently now implemented by using CityGPS false/true in the code. It sounds like it does.

Thanks again, D. As for the rest of you on "team beta"- don't forget about being helpful, please.. And you don't need to "defend" the new tweak. We're already diggin it! Such defensiveness sometimes.
