There's an app on the AppStore called WiThrottle (and WiThrottle Lite). It's a wifi based throttle (controller) for model railroads that interacts with computer software called JMRI to control, well, trains.

Would it be possible for a tweak to be written that would allow the volume controls to operate the speed (forward and reverse)? Currently, there's an Android program that has this feature called Train Driver. While WiThrottle is a hundred times better than TD, not having volume controls means you spend a lot of time looking at your iPhone/iPod/iPad instead of at your trains.
