Enable 720p video recording on iPhone 3GS
For the impatient: Download the file to enable HD video recording (and playback) on iPhone 3GS
Copy N88AP.plist to /System/Library/CoreServices/SpringBoard.app/
Copy the 3 other plist files to /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Celestial.framework/N88/
More information here
Update1: The recorded video can be played-back on the 3GS as well!.
Update2: The aspect ratio is corrected.Last edited by mpan3; 10-22-2010 at 03:37 AM.

Anyway of playing the video on OPlayer instead of inside the camera roll? In theory it should be able to decode the video and play it @ 720p?

I found a way to make the phone playback the recorded HD video as well. Simply edit CameraRollValidator.plist and MediaValidator.plist, they can be found in the same place as AVCapture.plist.
Replace 768 with 1280, and replace
withCode:<key>MaxLevel</key> <integer>30</integer>
Code:<key>MaxLevel</key> <integer>31</integer>

Nice I'll try once I get home. Any noticeable difference on the actual device or is it a must to transfer off of device onto a computer to see the full hd quality?
And is this for the 960x version or is this for the full 1082x that couldnt play back on the device clarification please?Last edited by Destron5150; 10-14-2010 at 08:37 PM.

Destron, my version saves the video at 1280x800 @ 30fps @ ~20Mbps. It looks sharper and less compressed on the iPhone screen than the 3Mbps crap that comes with the firmware, but of course the difference is even more pronounced when played back on a computer screen.

Nice any chance of a Cydia release anytime soon so newbies like myself don't have to **** with any .plist?

Ratio issue...
@mpan3 : It works for me but I'm just having a issue with the ratio, the video is strech. Is there a fix (except downgrading resolution to 960x720) ?

1080x800 also works for me, this gives me an aspect ratio of 1.35, which is not too far from the original 1.33 (640x480)
Try it

Thx, I will try it. But why the phone is streching the video (is he unable to record a good 16/9 video) ?

Because, well, For some reason the output from the sensor is always 4:3, even if i specify a 16:9 dimension. So to avoid any stretching, one have to encode the video to a 4:3 size (1280x960, or 1080x800)
Unless I can find a way for the phone to CROP video in realtime.

Ok, thanks for your answer.
1280x960 doesn't work.« Tonight the night. And it's going to happen again and again. Has to happen. Nice night ... »

Any cydia plans? Also how does this compare to the iPhone 4?

I am working on a Cydia release, but I want to make sure everything works first. Hopefully with configurable bitrate and framerate. (lower framerate gives you better low-light image quality, since the shutter is open for longer).
It's still a long way from the iPhone4, which has a backlit sensor which is allegedly more sensitive to light, and reduced rolling shutter effect.

It is nearly 4:3 ratio, so it is not stretched.
It is just a bigger resolution.« Tonight the night. And it's going to happen again and again. Has to happen. Nice night ... »
