how to get iphone apps right off the phone

hello my question is how do i get apps off a iphone without using itunes, i bought an iphone that had ********** on it already and there are some apps i want off it before i sync it to my computer. i dont always have access to the internet as i travel alot. and i know i can just redownload them from **********, again that is not exactly an option for me.
i found the source folder for apps using iphone browser, but i copied them over to my computer 16 digit folder and transfered it to my ipad, and i couldnt get the app to load. i did get it to show up on the springboard. but it would not load.
do i need to convert the inside files onto a .ipa file and load it onto the ********** DIR and install that way? how can i do that then?
