So I have got my image off the phone and ran it through PhotoRec. I ended up getting a bunch of files, but I don't see any of my pictures. I tried searching for jpg files but found nothing. I also ended up getting like 5 sqlite files, I use SQLite Database Browser to look at them but non of them looks like my contacts.

I get a bunch of txt, xml, png, aif, and a few other file types. Is my data somewhere hidden in here? I do not see any picture or jpg files.

Can someone tell me what settings to use in PhotoRec. Am I doing something wrong?

Also when I used dd to copy the iPhone disk I didn't provide any bs option. I saw on a few post they suggested to use bs=4096. Should I try to recopy my iPhone disk using bs=4096.

    Default what's next?
So, if we are able to extract the phone partition image, how do we restore contacts and messages to iphone?

you are suppose too run PhotoRec on the image to retrive the SQLite database file, i.e. contact list. This didn't work for me.

    Default need help
    Hi.
    I need your help please.
I'm getting as far as doing the "umount -f /private/var" but cant do "mount -o ro /private/var" anymore because after the "umount" the fon crashes and closes down the ssh (as i belive) (it doesn't respond anymore and the terminal doesn't finish the command). so do you have any idea what to different? thank you so much (by the way i'm using an iPhone 4 iOS 4.0.1 and Mac OSX 10.6.4)

    EY.YO, look at post 16
Guide: Recover Lost or Deleted Photos/Files on iPhone 3G/S (Jailbroken) on a Mac

make sure to see how your rdisk is showing.
i spend much time on that till i found the descriptor was different then the one on this thread.
For sure yours is diff too.

run the "mount" command empty and have a look

    cheers!!!

I have done photorec and scalpel with the image. i extracted both disk0 and rdisks02. so far, i couldn't find any of the contact list database. and some of the images are gone. i can find my first pics, some of the last, but i couldn't find some images like somewhere in the middle. haha
i remember iphone has sequential storage policy like they will write to all the space one time before they do that again. what happen if we restore the phone? does it start from the beginning of partition? i am guessing that's where my contact lists are.

HAWXE - there is a big probability that if u have restored your phone, your data has been over-written.

    Default not quiete there yet
so i was pretty happy when mobile terminal on my fon showed me
    iPhone:/var/mobile root# dd if=/dev/rdisk0s2s1 bs=4096KB | ssh [email protected] 'dd of=iphone_rdisk0s2s1_4096.img' Password:
    3669+1 records in
    3669+1 records out
    15029575680 bytes (15 GB) copied, 15130.7 s, 993 kB/s
    29354640+0 records in
    29354640+0 records out
    15029575680 bytes transferred in 15126.516502 secs (993591 bytes/sec)
    iPhone:/var/mobile root#
so i started the photorec exactly as described in the first post.
but in the end just got
PhotoRec 6.12-WIP, Data Recovery Utility, April 2010
    Christophe GRENIER <[email protected]>
    CGSecurity

    Disk iphone_rdisk0s2s1_4096.img - 15 GB / 13 GiB (RO)
Partition Start End Size in sectors
    P HFSX 0 0 1 1827 61 42 29354640

    0 files saved in /Users/lukasprehn/Downloads/Neuer Ordner/recup_dir directory.
    Recovery completed.
so anybody got an idea on what to change.. there should be a lot of pictures in there. and i just did an dfu restore, didn't put an back up on or anything.
    thank you very much.

gcool, yes i understand that part. but i thought the restore process will only use the OS partition and so we could salvage most of our data from user partition. that's what i thought and apparently that's not the case.
And i always thought that my contact list database would be on the first few sector of the user partition, which is very likely to be replaced after the restore and jailbreak process.
correct me if i am wrong. I just don't get why i can get my messages but not a hint of my contact lists

hawxe & gcool> I thought too that user data was on the second partition and that doing a restore would erase the first one, but only "show as empty" on the second ? I have managed a few time to recuperate some photos, but never data in sqlite files. What about you ? How did you get your sms back hawxe? Did you do a restore (I actually have done several, but never added info after).

When I tried to connect my macbook to the iphone 4 through ssh at first it said that connection was refused. Once I reinstalled openssh on my iphone it became connection closed by remote host. Anyone know what I can do to fix this?
