Don't use SBSettings to clear the memory if it's over 40mb. Otherwise it doesn't know what to clear.

I got rid of the VM daemon. It caused nothing but problems. So i rarely see 40MB free. haha

Which VM method were you using? The one I have seems to be a-ok

I tried the VM thing and got up to 85mb free but my phone locked up if it dropped to 30mb. I normally have 55mb free and can take it all the way down to single digits before the phone starts killing things to free up resources, so I didn't see any advantage using VM. Sure I got 30mb extra free memory, but it was not useable.

Anyway, I don't see much of a point to the free memory obsession. Free memory isn't necessarily a good thing. An operating system is supposed to cache and buffer as much memory as it can get it's hands on and anything not in use is wasted in that regard. Once something needs that memory, it will clear the cache and buffers anyway.

The only free memory problem I have seen is that the Apple apps (ipod, safari, mail etc) run in the background, and if you open a game when you have low memory, the system kills the game when it should kill the Apple apps.

I tried both VM hacks and the phone would always lock up when free RAM was under 30mb. I decided to restore and stay away from these hacks. I have also tried removing the safe Daemons and kept getting safe mode crashes. In my opinion it's best to stay away from these hacks. Get a 3GS if you want speed. Unfortunately I will have to wait until April because I am not eligible for an upgrade.
