Keeping game saves?
A new update came out for a app and I was just wondering how I can keep my save? I don't want to redo my progress. If I load the ipa in itunes of the updated game will it replace the old games saves?
how can I fix this?

I dont know if an update will reset your game, but to save your current game status, just backup the documents folder of that game.
In other words go to "var\mobile\Applications\XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX\Documents"
You have to find the folder with the specific game. Then just update, in case you lose your saved game, just copy it and make sure the permissions are set as they should be.
Let us know if iTunes deletes the saved game, or if it just updates it.

I have no idea how to even access var/mobile/Applications/xxxx/documents
if you could possibly explain the process that would be fantastic. Thanks.

Is your phone jailbroken?
It better be, if not, then you wont be able to do that.
If you got iTunes 9, then use DiskAid (freeware), just google for it. But if you still (like me) have >iTunes9 i.e. 8, then use something like iTunes Tunnel Suite.
Basically using those applications you can browse your iDevices file system, which Apple doesnt want you to. This allows you to backup and modify files.
Using something like DiskAid, just SSH into your phone (i.e. connect your phone to your computer using DiskAid) and browse to that directory "var/mobile/Applications/xxxx/documents". There you will be able to save it.
Hope this helps.
(Sorry, I'm in a rush)

Yeah, just use DiskAid, browse to the location, back it up and you'll be fine.

So all I need to backup my game saves is only the Documents folder located here... "var\mobile\Applications\XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX\Documents"
There is no other files needed to be backed up?
Once I restore my iPhone 3GS and SSH the Documents folder back into its location, what permissions number should I use?
Thanks!

Someone should really package this functionality into a jailbreak app. It is a pain to have to ssh any info.
