Application installation

I'm not sure if I am posting this in the right location. I was given a few apps for the Iphone and I have been told that I need to install them via cuteftp (????)

Does anyone know of where there is a detailed step by step process.

I was told that I need to use the username: root and password: alpine - is this for when I ftp in to the phone?

All apps will install through iTunes, unless they are cracked. Then, no help here I'm afraid...

Thank-you for the help - now I cant seem to install openSSH

I get the following error "Error Couldn't configure pre-depend dpkg for ncurses. probably a dependency cycle."

Any suggestions - I only recent jail-breaked this phone with redSn0w so I don't think it could be and previously installed packages.
