:(
it would be awesome to find a new way to do this,
if anyone is interested i no ware the .png file is located,
/System/Library/CoreServices/SpringBoard.app
its named appleboot.png
(i found it on my 3GS with winSCP)
But the png files is a special format of png modded by Apple for the iPhone and you can't just simply drop a normal png.
theres a blog about decoding the .png file here
(i think its an old blog n might not even work on the new 3.0)
>>> DWBlog Blog Archive iPhone .png Decoding
if anyone figures it out i would love to no how it was done, if i figure it out ill post

Apple stores the PNG in a non-standard format. There are open source converters that change the non-standard to standard so you can see them on your PC. We just need someone to write the program in reverse so that it can take a standard PNG and convert it to Apple's version, which we could then use to replace the stock image.
It shouldn't be that hard really. If someone with more experience doesn't do it soon, I might take a crack at it.

ok here's the crazy thing i did it before and i freaking forgot. i went into settings, wallpaper and when i got the photo i wanted there were two like little circles, one had like an exclamations but it was a the top of the photo one on the left, one on the right. now i put one of my photos for the mms background. the other circle, dot whatever it was, was for the boot logo. i changed it and didn't like it so i went back with the apple logo.now i can't seem to get to the photos with the lil circles. can anyone make sense of what the hell i'm saying...

I posted it somewhere else, but just in case, there it goes again:
ALL: figured it out, in order to change boot logo ONLY, if you're already jailbroken (by whatever means, i.e. using Geohot's blackra1n on 3.1.2), redsn0w can still be used to change your boot logos, revert back to the stock logos, or switch verbose booting on and off. By selecting “Already Pwned” you can bypass the steps normally needed to enter the jailbroken state.
For more info, please refer to "What if I'm already jailbroken?" from the following guide:
redsn0w 0.9.2 [iPhone Dev Team]
Hope it helps!
