problem getting firmware to jailbreak itouch

im trying to jailbreak my ipod touch 1g and i've downloaded 2 difrent firwares for it both for the 1g and i cant get them to work, im having a friend walk me trough it so i have the right files. but its just not working when i go to restore my ipod with the firware it says its not compatibal. what should i do?

i have 2 questions well one is a statmement

1) is your itunes up to date to allow 3.0 firmware?
2) if your itouch is alreayd at 3.0 firmware then just use redsnow
