I will pay someone 50usd to figure out how to get a new 3G or 3GS to charge with older car chargers.
If you guys can figure out how to unlock/jailbreak these darn things, I'm sure you can figure out how to make my old car chargers work.

It would probably charge while in Airplane Mode... But then you can't actually use the phone, but it would charge (hopefully)

Ok, I'll tell you how.

Apple changed the pin order in the 3g/3gs dock connector, hence chargers had to be updated with the new pin order to match. (It had to do with USB/firewire support BS)

So, you want an older charger to work.....

You'd have to disassemble it and swap around all the wires going to all points on the connector. It aint gonna happen with software.

Maybe there is way to talk people out of 5 or ten dollars to convert their old adapters to work with the newer phones. Other than that I don't see a benefit of doing this.

All new apple products just the new pin configuration. Not just the iPhone. My car iPod cable does not charge my iPod touch but I am awaiting the new cable to be released so I can just swap it.
