homescreen icon positioning?

i have been googling all night and im trying to find out how you can have the spaces in between the icons to allow for your wallpaper picture to be seen more clearly like the picture in the link below

sorry for the picture used..but that was the one stuck in my head to try to resemble..but i mean y wouldnt it be stuck in there huh....

any help would be much appreciated....thanks

im pritty sure this is done with a hack involving blank.app

i havent tried it myself so im not too sure how easy it is.
