iPhone Video Decoders

So I happened across the video decoders on the iPhone and it made me wonder if anyone was trying to build additional decoders for the iPhone. I have absolutely no idea what go into this sort of a project, but I know that there are several made for OS X. Like; Divx, Perian, and several others that allow you to play many other video formats in quicktime. And if an additional video decoder was created for the iPhone, would safari utilize the new decoder? Hmmm.... Anybody already working on this idea yet?

More than likely those really smart guys over at NullRiver are but they don't talk to us... so who the heck knows
