That could be the case -- but it's a risk that any repair shop runs, and they must insure themselves against it. As it is, we either assume the store employees' good faith (the phone stopped working at that time by sheer coincidence) or we assume they broke it while trying to open it (the case opening tool slipped, or something) and were too lame to take responsibility. As they were the only people there, we are forced to speculate about these things -- which leads to the ugly shouting match above. Really, they should have insured their repair operations.

I feel for you
I really feel for you BUT, as I am a tech i have run into numerous situations where something happens to a product and it appears to work fine, when I remove the cover to do a simple inspection the seal is broken and it causes additional issues with the product, but the fact is You dropped it in water and caused the initial problem to begin with, though the apple store should have informed you BEFORE they took the phone in the back room that if they open it it was possible that it will only get worse, I always tell this to my customers so that they know I as the tech nor my company is responsible for any damage that can be a result of the initial problem.

I would be pretty annoyed too, but I agree with one guy who posted about it was just bad timing that the iPhone had to.. Well turn into an expensive paperweight.. I don't think it is Apples fault, and as the Apple IT person here says, all the repairers are fully trained about this stuff.. Sorry not to be on your side mate but that seems like what's happened
