Manually disabling automatic carrier selection?

hi,
a friend of mine just bought an iPhone 3G and removed the sim-lock using a nextsim card.

the problem is that he does not have a carrier selection menu item in his settings.

does anyone know how to disable the automatic carrier selection and make the iPhone stick to one single carrier (in this case O2) manually (so by editing .plist-files or something)?
