Modified hosts file and apps

I realize some apps dont allow a modified hosts file. This is extremely aggravating because adds suck battery life and load times. It isnt right to force someone to look at ads especially if you dont allow a paid ad free version. Does anyone know how to enable a modified hosts file and make the apps still run ie sbsettings and categories.
