Default Backup and restore Just Contacts?
I want to wipe my iphone but want to make sure I can restore my contacts, anyone know how I can do this? I don't want to choose backup when I restore it, as I don't want anything else including the file structure which was modded by bosstool.

    Manually backup the file ,
but make sure your restoring to the exact firmware to avoid risks!

The directory the has your contacts is "/private/var/mobile/Library/AddressBook"...
Copy the files within the directory to your new wiped iphone .

    Hope I helped

The aptbackup does not work for me. It just sits there spinning when you try to restore after installing new firmware. Yes, I waited long enough to see if it would finish...27 minutes.

I used this method before when updating from 2.0.1 to 2.0.2 and last time from 2.0.2 to 2.1, it works fine, the only problem i can´t change or erase the photo from an existing contact, any idea why?

If the backup was made by iTunes, that's not easy. You have to locate the backup (on Windows it's in CDocuments and Settings\[user]\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup) and then use mdhelper on a Mac to find the right backup file and extract it.
Windows tool to edit .plist, .strings and .nib files: pledit.
Or use a website that will convert the binary form to a readable format.
On iPhone you can convert those files in a terminal with plutil (installed with Erica Utilities from Cydia), or edit them with iFile (from Cydia).

If you use a mac, you can set it so the contacts sync back to you address book application on your comp. Then you can sync them through the info tab in iTunes.

Contacts aren't part of the backup. Contacts are meant to be synched to your computer (Outlook, Address Book) or a Cloud service so that they can be safe should something happen to your phone.

On a Mac computer, Contacts live in the Applications folder called “Address Book”. I remember a couple years ago I had to delete old contacts from there so it wouldnt add to my iPhone when syncing. I have to do a computer backup and not iCloud now, because Wi-fi doesn’t work in my phone anymore since I dropped it (until I can get iPhone5).here is any chance of at least some of the photos to be recovered: how do you restore lost contacts from iPhone 4/4s/5 without backup file. this is my expereince I used.

As we know, every time you sync iDevice with iTunes, it will automatically make a backup of your iDevice contents including photos, SMS, reminders, contacts and more. Therefore, as long as you have ever synced your iPhone 4/4S/5 with iTunes, you can get the lost messages from iPhone 4/4S/5 backup files created by iTunes.

Default if you never backed contacts up
I used enigma recovery to retrieve all my lost iphone message and contacts internet history etc they was really supportive and not expensive, it may be worth contacting them and asking the question. unless you have sorted this.

You can extract your contacts from the iTunes backup when you lost your iPhone. iTunes can automatically back up your iPhone contacts and update it every time when you sync it. So you really have a big chance to recover contacts from iTunes backup.
If you don't synced, you can directly scan and recover deleted contacts from your iPhone.

Solution 1: Scan and extract iTunes backup to recover iPhone contacts (without iPhone)
Step 1: Scan the backup file
Step 2: Recover your iPhone contacts

Solution 2: Directly scan and recover contacts from iPhone 5/4S/4/3GS
Step 1: Connect your iPhone to the computer
Step 2: Enter the device's scanning mode and scan it
    1) Hold your device and click the "Start" button.
    2) Pressing the "Power" and "Home" buttons at the same time for exact 10 seconds.
    3) Then release the "Power" button, but keep holding "Home" for another 15 seconds until you get
Step 3: Preview and recover iPhone contacts
