alright this is pretty easy so don't worry. you will need winterboard installed on a jailbroken ipod/iphone for this. first you need a sound that you want as the sent message or whatever. save it to your desktop. it should be 2 to 3 seconds long-if not just download a free sound editing software if you don't already have one. now that you have a 2 to 3 second sound clip, you need to know what to name it.

    lock.caf (lock sound)

    unlock.caf (unlock sound)

mail-sent.caf (mail sent sound-not sms sent)

new-mail.caf (new mail sound-not new sms)

    ReceivedMessage.caf (new message)

    SentMessage.caf (message was sent)

    sms-received1.caf (received sms sound)

    voicemail.caf (new voicemail)

so now you have named your sound file(s). now create a new folder and name it whatever you like. open up that new folder and inside it make another folder-name this folder UISounds (it has to be exactly that or it won't work). now put your sounds that you have renamed and that are 2 to 3 seconds long in this folder. now close the folder. now you need to ssh (i prefer WinSCP) open it up and near the top right there is a home button-dont click it but click the button that has a picture of a folder with an arrow type thing on it. click it until you cant click it anymore. now in the list of things in your ipod (the right side) double click private. when that open there should be two named folders-etc and var. double click on var. now that should open up to a list with a bunch of stuff-scroll down until you find stash-double click stash. when that opens there should be like 7 named folders-you want to double click on Themes. now you can just copy your folder into there and there you go. just go into winterboard and apply it and you should hear your sounds when you do your stuff.

Can be as long as you want. Using a winterboard template to change your sounds is SOOOO much easier.

the templates, are they the ones on cydia? cus some of them are nice but i want my own sounds on there the reason i asked about length was because i had pre recorded some sounds using my computer and renamed them all correctly and placed them in the correct directory in winSCP however the sounds didn't activate when the certain action was performed

any help you could offer would be great

I wrote a short tutorial on this based on this post and others I found and my own experience. I also include a download link to some .caf files i made from Zen Collection ringtones.

I hope this is ok to link here. (I did look for some rules on this!)

I customize all my sounds with Quicktime and Audacity.. Works every time. Maybe apple will eventually let us change the sounds from the Settings screen, someday.
