Add Unread Mail Badge to Gmail App
I've replaced my mail app with an app that opens gmail instead. The reason for using an app instead of a webclip is to try to get the mail app to update the unread count from my gmail imap onto this new gmail icon (making a badge like on the default mail app). I was able to use mobile calendar to update the date on a google calendar icon, but I can't figure out how where mobile mail does it. Any suggestions?

Why didn't you just use the regular mail.app and configure it to use gmail imap? Seems like a wasted effort to redesign the wheel for a function that's already built in.

Because I like the mobile gmail much better than gmail through imap.

You will need to write a service to do this for you. It will need to store your account info so it can use the Gmail API to pick up the number.
Not sure how tricky it will be for a non-SpringBoard app to set a badge.
