you can't really "modify the firmware". you can jailbreak your device using PwnageTool (or WinPwn) and then change system files, but that's about it I'd say

Seriously, you need to provide a little more info if you really expect people to help.

Sorry, I provided too less information previously. So, What I'm going to do is what I would resize partition sizing, add some programs,or something looking like Ghost file based on Windows after restoring firmware instead of installing every program again?
Thanks

You need to jailbreak your phone and then you can SSH into it and change system files but I wouldn't go trying to rewrite the whole thing. You just might mess up your phone beyond repair.

Pwnage tool does exactly this, you can control partition size and add different installer packages so they come pre-installed when you restore your phone

well, I don't use it but I think I recall it can change the boot logo as well ... don't know about partition size, but you don't really need that anyway

At the moment, the WinPwn 2.0.0.4 has been released already and also it can make what I would like to get in term of resizing system partition. Excellent! BUT still using FW 1.1.4 now. I'm making up my mind to upgrade. any suggestions?
Thanks

why not update? 2.0.1 is pretty stable as far as I can tell, it supports the appStore and the most important jailbreak-apps are ported already.

What is different between FW 2.0 and FW 2.0.1? and Should we be moving on 2.0.1?
Thanks

well, 2.0.1 "only" contains bugfixes, but i found that it runs much much faster and more stable than 2.0, so I would advise to upgrade.
