Turn Off Icon Auto Arrange / Auto Align

I want to start off by saying I am so new at this im not even a noob yet! Im prenoob! but I have been browsing around and I cannot seem to find an answer to the question if you can turn off the auto align/arrange grid for the home screen icons so that you can put icons wherever you want.

Instead of using categories I kept making more screens and grouping the icons on each screen. I want to arrange them up and down to the left or at the bottom but not on the dock. Is that possible?

Thank you in advance for any help.....and all the inevitable laughing at my noobdom....

I am also curious on how to do this...matter of fact, it really needs to be done. Take a look at this theme I made. It is done with blanks, etc, but if we can figure out how to manually arrange the icons, a whole different world of themes will become available.

No, you can't turn this feature off. The iPhone interface uses a matrix of 16 blocks for each icon per page. They will always align to one of these 16 blocks.

But you could add "blank" apps to act as spacers.

Edit: Oops, which BigRedNewton already mentioned.

And you could also shift your icons around the block, to make them "appear" to be in a different place. Blocks are 60x60 so if you make your icon smaller, and then say move it to the top right corner of the 60x60 image, it'll look off center.

Yeah, thats kinda what I've been doing, making them bigger and smaller to make the illusion. Oh, one day...

But just to clarify guys, most of the things are apps. The bird is maps, the outer edge of the pc is youtube, inner-safari, post it note-text, keyboard-email, mouse-settings, the obvious phone-phone, calendar-calendar...then the mug is categories for the rest of the apps. I am constantly updating though, so if anyone wants, I'll keep you guys posted.
