    Default Change root password
The error message you received is because the sh shell doesn't know how to run the 'perl' command.

Here's your encrypted password, based on your screenshot:

    XUgf3qrkZHd0Y

Note: not sure you should use it now ;-)

From THIS PAGE, scroll down and you can see this is the procedure to change the password:

If you don't like 'dottie', you can generate a new encrypted password by running:

    perl -e 'print crypt("MYPASSWORD", "XU");'

Where MYPASSWORD is the new password you want, and XU is a random two-letter salt. Copy the encrypted output and replace the existing one in /etc/master.passwd on the phone.
Edit you can run this from any *nix (Linux, Unix, OS X) terminal. I'd guess you can also get it from a Windows DOS prompt, oh wait you call it the command window, right ;-)

I created a script that easily generates your crypted password with simple step-by-step on how you can change the master.passwd file yourself. Go to http://iphone.simbunch.com and click on the "Changing root password" link

You would need to get 'perl' installed and running, then you could run the command in the terminal on your iPhone. I don't see 'perl' in the iPhone bin-kit so I guess the answer is not yet.

While your page is friggin' awesome, I just have a problem using the Internet to create a script for the root account of my iPhone. Maybe if your site was: https://iphone.simbunch.com/

I just want to warn everybody so that you dont make the same mistake i did.

I used the generator, and i edited the master.password list thing, so i thought i would be smart and create a new user that way by copying the root and changing its username.

well that was a big NO NO. it bricked my phone and i had to do a factory restore, restore my mods, then restore from itunes. not fun.

Dude that sux! Glad you're back up and running.

With all this unix stuff there are indeed 'correct' ways of doing things and then there are 'incorrect'. I'll note that under 'incorrect'

I'll look around, I'm pretty sure I've read something about that.

The code generator works, it changes your password. But there is no way to use it, once you edit your master.password file the iPod freezes. Only way i got mine to unfreeze was to replace the original password file.
