iPhone fonts suck, so I changed them to Nokia S60
How should I summarize it?... iPhone fonts suck in many ways..., so I changed them to Nokia S60.
...I love Helvetica, it's a great font. Really. Sleek, tight, sobre. Essence. So masculine. I really like it. But on the tight screen of the phone a more condensed font looks better. So... tada... meet Nokia S60. Condensed, legible, with personality. I like it so much, so I decided to put it on my iPhone. I liked it even more after that, so I decided I would share that soothing pleasure with you guys.
Also, iPhone's Mobile Safari [fonts] lack script support beside Latin-1, and so, by this replacement, it gains a much greater Unicode coverage (no more Times+Helvetica interbreeding, yay!).
Some background: the iPhone UI is hardcoded in Helvetica, so almost every other font in the system (/var/Fonts and /var/Fonts/Cache) appears to be used by Mobile Safari or some other applications; there lies Arial, Courier New, Georgia, Times New Roman, Trebuchet, Verdana and some asian fonts -- the common www fonts. Marker Felt is used in Notes.app. American Typewriter is conspicuously absent from any application I've seen so far. Some of them, like Apple Gothic Regular (some asian script) and Helvetica Neue (cyrillic) are used only for some non-english scripts. The fonts are fine, I don't complain about their appearance, but I lack the Unicode support.
Basically you would replace the fonts from your iPhone (/var/Fonts and /var/Fonts/Cache) with those provided here. I won't teach you how to do it, or how to make a backup of your system files. It's very trivial and you will find that info practically everywhere. But, of course, your iPhone needs to be jailbreaken.
That's about it. Enjoy the mod and feel free to give feedback.

just download it and take a looksy. It'd be alot quicker than waiting for a reply imo. You could always just replace it with a font that includes Turkish characters if the Nokia S60 font doesn't i think. But i haven't done this nor do i know how to so...

The original fonts are replaced with this mod, so you can't have the (old) Helvetica and the (new) Nokia S60 simultaneously.
That bubble is hideous, but I believe it can be changed into something else by modifying MobileSMS.app (the bubbles are two PNGs in that folder).
I attached the original, unmodified fonts (from /var/Fonts/Cache/).Alone in the basement, building up powerful dog emotions.

No problem. The icon set has reflective dock optional icons and you should def use those if you like mine. Just replace the icons you use for the dock with reflective ones and bam they look shiny.

Love this font. I used to have a N73 and N80 and one of the things I missed about the phone (among other many things) was the font.
Now I have it back. Thanks for this!

Safari, to be realistic, looks like crap with the Nokia font. And really bad memories from the current Nokia's crap browser. Also its web pages are unreadable in portrait mode. Full HTML support means that most fonts should render properly instead of using Nokia's backward standard of viewing everything the same.
Found the trick, just replace Helvaetia font in both the /var/fonts/cache and the /fonts/ directory if you only want to use the Nokia font as the system font (covers mail, sms, calendar ...., almost everything but Safari). Leave the others as they are.
You seem to be good at this. Why don't you create a Nokia-ized Summerboard theme? It would be so old-school. The same way people are using IntelliScreen and iToday to turn their phones into cluttered Windows Mobile phones.Last edited by dbs; 06-01-2008 at 06:35 PM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost

Maybe Droid?
Well, I prefer to replace all the fonts with Nokia S60 (especially in the Safari browser), mostly because it's slightly condensed, it is much more legible at small sizes and it has a great UNICODE coverage.
On my desktop's browser I use the Droid family (Sans/Serif/Mono) from the Google's Android OS (you can extract them from the SDK). Maybe I will mod them someday for the iPhone, also. They are designed for a mobile screen, after all.Alone in the basement, building up powerful dog emotions.

I know this topic is out of date but can somebody port these zip files to 3.1.2? I just simply love these fonts!
