Easy question about changing icons

So I've done quite a few of the mods explained on this site so far. But one I haven't messed with yet is changing the icons. I was just wondering if when you replace an icon with a new image, do you lose the darkening ability of the icon? Like when you press on it, it darkens to let you know it's being pressed.
