International setting for keyboard
Thought I would share this howto for those who needs International keyboard.
The International settings (including localizations, languages, and keyboards) are all present in the iPhone 1.1.1 firmware, but are by default disabled by Apple, probably because development is not yet completed for these features and/or because the iPhone has not yet been released outside the U.S. Nonetheless, they seem to work without causing any issues if you enable them. To do so:
1. Use an SFTP client on your iPhone (Cyberduck, Winscp, etc)
2. Log into your iPhone via SFTP from your computer
3. Copy the file /System/Library/CoreServices/SpringBoard.app/M68AP.plist to your computer.
4. Open M68AP.plist, and change the boolean /root/capabilities/International from NO to YES, then save the file.
5. Upload the modified M68AP.plist to your iPhone, overwriting the original
6. Restart your iPhone
7. Now look in Settings->General->International
enjoy.

make sure that you have SSH installed and activated
if you havent install ssh, you can install it from apptapp.
youll need to install bsd subsystem as well.
both are located in the apptap>system>
if this helps pls thank me.
thank youLast edited by forsyt; 11-26-2007 at 03:16 AM.

Is this method can also show international keyboard for 1.1.2 firmware? I mean the languages that are not yet implemented/finished.

check if u hav open ssh installed. if not, then install it. you can only install open ssh if bsd subsystem is installed so install that too. next thing u shoul check is if u have a wifi network, if u do check if ur pc and iphone is under the same subnet. check ur phone ip, and use that to connect.
hope this fix ur problem. if not we go deeper. check if ur firewall or windows firewall is blocking port 22.
just tell me if u hav any questons or require instruction on the how tos of the above.
sent from my iphone

I have openssh installed, but noticed that bsd subsystem folder is missing. looked in unistalled and reinstalled it 4 times. It seems like it's not doing anything. Also, i have wi-fi connection and tried disabling my firewall. Apparantely no luck so far. Even tired changing SFTP to SCP

forsyt, thanks for your help and I made sure to thank you:
I'm not sure how this happened, but from install > all packages > then scroll down until you see "enable international menu."
> Click install, and all functions including international, region format and keyboard automatically become enable. For others who are curious to know which language, regional format and Keyboards that are available i have listed them below. The phone i'm using is a 1.1.1 firmware out of the box. I didn't have to use winscp to modified files that are listed above. Hopefully for others who had a hard time like me could try this first.

English, Russian, Francais, Deutsch, Japanese, Nederland’s, Italiano, Espanol, Portuguese, Danish, Suomi, Norsk Bokmal, Svenska, (the last three i could not make out due to character, Could be Korean, Chinese and i dunno)

I can't find the "Enable International Menu" in the Installer/All Packages. I have 1.1.2 OTB 4.6 BL. Is there any way to get that App?
I can't find the Cyberduck or Winscp in the Installer. Is there some SFTP client in it? Where could I find the Winscp or Cyberduck? I'm using 1.1.2 OTB 4.6 BL. Thanks.
Sorry, and I'm new on this.Last edited by vidaldk; 01-19-2008 at 06:20 AM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost

I used this patch to use japanese keyboard in 1.1.1
now I upgraded to 1.1.3, naturally, the hack was wiped out but I edited it again, but now I can only see a few keyboards (english, french, german, and 2-3 more) but no japanese... how can I enable that specific keyboard.
it was enabled in 1.1.3 immediately after upgrade (I've enabled it in 1.1.1) so i'm sure it's there somewhere, but once I opened preferences app, it was wiped out.

This will do it.
I noticed one problem, though. It killed my maps. So take maps.app out of the applications folder before installing it onto your phone. Can anyone get their maps.app and fileshare it to me? I really don't want to have to restore my phone.
All other programs are fine, though.
